I work as a marine engineer on a container ship and I’ve visited more than 45 countries. It can be tough living in a confined space with the same people for long stretches of time. I do yoga every day on the ship to look after my mental health. And when we land, I don’t go to places like malls — I prefer talking to local people and finding quiet spots in nature.
I love meeting people, especially Australians and New Zealanders, because they’re honest, lovable, and friendly. Back home in India, when you talk to a stranger you don’t have the same open, easy conversations — there’s always some kind of restriction.
The lifestyle is very different too. Like today, it’s a Saturday morning and we’re just sitting here relaxing and talking. We can see people jogging, walking their dogs, spending time with their kids. You don’t see much of that in India because people are mostly focused on work and money.
I’ve been working on ships for five years now, and I’ll keep doing it for about five more. By then I’ll have saved enough to keep supporting my family and move to New Zealand. I love how quiet it is there. When I go, I want to work with animals. My first wish is to become a veterinarian. I’ve always loved animals, and working with them has been my dream since I was a child.
