I’m from Utah and I’m one year into a two year voluntary missionary placement In Melbourne. I felt it was something I needed to do. I definitely wasn’t forced by family or friends. It’s been a great decision because of the growth I’ve experienced.
Back in high school I was never one to excel. I was a Bs and Cs student. I didn’t try very hard and I never felt like I could be great. I’m passionate on this mission though and strive to be the best that I can be.
That’s taken a lot of hard work and determination and I’ve had to learn some new skills. I’ve learnt to be open to people from all walks of life and to really listen so I can understand them and connect better. I never would have had this if I’d stayed back in the states.
Even though I’ve always believed in God and I’ve always known that he loves me, I never used to feel that close. Now that I’m a missionary I feel that love and closeness on a day-to-day basis. I feel this through interactions with people, through reading the bible, spiritual experiences and even small miracles. Maybe I’ve had a hard day and then some random stranger comes up and give me money.
The best piece of advice I can give anybody is to find a connection with God. When you find that you’ll find the values that make you a better person as you’ll be given the experiences you need to become the best. That’s why we’re here on earth. Grow closer to God and everything you’re searching for will come with that.
In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it’s not our place to judge others if they come to God through a different religion, or even without a religion. As long as you’re growing closer to God, that’s great. That’s your personal connection and if you need to learn anything it will come from him.
