My name is Ethiopian and its meaning in English is “the one”. My adoptive mother is Italian and my father is a Kiwi. I was born in Ethiopia, grew up in California and came to New Zealand in 2022.
My mother sent me to opera singing lessons when I was seven. At first she love bombed me saying how good I was. She then started putting me down and kept telling me I couldn’t sing. I believed her and stopped singing opera for a long time. I also studied ballet and have danced at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York.
I busk as a way to connect and be brave. I’m a very shy person. Music can make us feel so many different emotions. And by sharing the music I love, I hope to create small moments of connection and healing—for others, and for myself too.
My motto in life is to be brave and don’t be afraid of people. Kindness goes a very long way.
I have a YouTube channel called Asknakech Love.
